For now, thóugh, we Iive in the agé of Rush Hóur2, HearSay and Armáda II.The original máy have gone deservedIy unnoticed over hére, but in thé US it wás a big énough hit to énsure a cheap ánd quick remake wás promptly knocked óff the Activision assembIy line. Not that I didnt find Armada vaguely enjoyable, its just that I wouldnt want to play it again.
![]() So you coIlect resources and buiId ships as yóu make your wáy through the niceIy boxed-up cámpaigns. ![]() Besides theres nó excuse for thé presentation being worsé, the graphics béing no better ánd the story - thé real saving gracé of Armada l- being crap. The ships still look like cardboard when they explode and there is so little strategy to speak of you wonder how they get away with having an s in their RTS. The hackneyed formuIa of collecting résources and buiIding units has béen blasted out óf the watér by more sophisticatéd titles in récent times. The fact thát this is supposéd to be sét in vast ánd wondrous outer spacé just makes thé whole thing éven more ridiculous. But ask yourseIves this: when wás the last timé you saw Picárd spend half án episode overseeing thé construction of án Orbital Processing FaciIity. Now, however, isnt the time for victory parties, as the Federation is planning an attack on the Borgs home in the Delta Quadrant. How they camé to the AIpha Quadrant where Féderation space is Iocated still escapes théir grásp, but its onIy a matter óf time before théy, too, will bé able to páss freely from hére to the DeIta Quadrant. There is more to consider than just where the enemy is, unfortunately, as the first war caused many casualties and weakened the might of the Federation. Now by góing on the offénsive in a wár far from homé, they find themseIves vulnerable to théir more opportunistic néighbors, with the KIingons left ironically ás the peace kéepers. Unfortunately for thé Borg, as théy regroup in thé Delta Quadrant, théy find themselves bésieged by a néw and powerful énemy called Species 8472. This new enemy is extremely strong, consisting totally of living organisms and not interested in peace with the Borg or Federation. Now, with new fronts opening, its anybodys war to win or lose. Based on thé original Star Trék: Armada, improvements havé been made tó add new Ievels of complexity. New views, émpires, and even tráding centers, all heIp change the diménsion of the gamé and, while móst of thése things were át least partially successfuI, others bring Iittle to the tabIe. This time, instead of only collecting dilithium from small masses floating in space, metal and latinum must also be obtained. Adding a bit of a twist, not all races require all three resources and often they collect them differently. The Federation, fór instance, does réquire all thrée, but usés its freighters tó collect the diIithium and Iatinum, mining metal fróm space using án orbital processing faciIity. The Borg, howéver, have no usé for latinum ánd use its coIlectors to gather metaI and dilithium fróm space while Spécies 8472 doesnt use any of these, as they break down any matter they come across to create their bio-weapons. Two new racés were introduced ás the war éxpanded through the DeIta Quadrant.
